PETER PAN: A MUSICAL ADVENTURE opens on September 30 until October 30, 2011!

Sir James Barrie’s timeless tale of the boy who never grew up is reborn as a spectacular musical by Stiles & Drewe and the late Willis Hall.

As the lights over Wendy, John and Michael Darling's beds go out and the nursery of their London townhouse is thrown into darkness, a small light bounces across their nursery. Wendy's dollhouse is mysteriously illuminated and dresser drawers slide open and shut. And then, most mysterious of all, an unseen hand pushes the bedroom windows open and, wonder of wonders, Peter Pan comes soaring through -- and into our hearts.

Peter Pan, a boy who didn't want to grow up and so spent his life in Neverland battling the pirates and Indians, but when he brings the Darling children to Neverland with him, he is finally able to defeat his foe, Captian Hook, and befriend the Indian chief.

Done in celebration of the 42nd Anniversary Year of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Philippine Theater Conference, Gathering of Theater Artists and Scholars at CCP in September

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Cultural Center of the Philippines and Teatro Sambisig Inc. present the very first national conference on Philippine Theatre aesthetics – “TANGHALIN ANG TANGHALAN".

The conference is on September 28-29, 2011 at the Silangan Hall of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila. Guest speakers include Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, Dr. Leoncio Deriada, Dr. Prospero Covar, Dr. Priscelina Legasto, Dr. Lulu Torres-Reyes, Dr. Orlando Magno, Mr. Nestor Horfilla, Mr. Lutgardo Labad, Prof. Jerry Respeto, Mr. Roberto Mendoza, Mr. Manny Pambid and other luminaries in cultural research.

The conference aims to provide a venue for sharing and critical discussion among theatre artists and scholars. The conference highlights include a presentation of research results of the “Tanghalan: A Preliminary Survey and Research on Regional Theater Aesthetics" and a sharing-discussion among theatre scholars, artists and students. The conference hopes to develop critical lenses in appreciating the richness and diversity of theatre work through the inputs of participating theatre practitioners.

From Shakes-fear to Shakes-peer

If there’s a word that strikes fear among highschool students more than Calculus or History combined: it’s Shakespeare. But what’s in a name? For most students, Shakespeare has become synonymous with long poetic dialogue, archaic language, confusing histories. Shakespeare has bored many a student to tears and made their noses bleed.

Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) for its 44th Theater Season takes Shakespeare off the lofty pedestal and makes The Bard a “peer”, or to borrow the term of the youth today a “kabarkada”.

PETA has come up with an original play that will cure students’ Shakes-fear and and turn the Bard into a Shakes-peer: everyone’s friend.

Directed by the same woman behind the hit musical dramedy “Care Divas”, PETA Artistic Director Maribel Legarda, comes a daring play that will breakdown barriers between Shakespeare and Filipino students: “William”.

“William” is set in a high school in Metro Manila, where five young students are forced to study Shakespeare by their terror class adviser, Ms. Lutgarda Martinez.

In the process of studying, they not only realize the beauty of Shakespeare’s works but also discover themselves through Shakespeares characters. The class muse, Sofia, finds out what true beauty is through “Romeo and Juliet”; the bully, TJ, encounters humility and grace through “Hamlet”; the brainy OFW’s daughter, Estella, learns forgiveness while the student council leader, Richard, learns self-acceptance through “Merchant of Venice”; and a timid lad, Erwin, finds his voice through “Julius Caesar”.

These high school barkada soon realize that Shakespeare is not just a literary icon meant to torment their lives, but is also a friend and peer. From then on, they begin referring to Shakespeare by his first name, “William.”

Writen by Ron Capinding, “William” uses rap and hip-hop to introduce Shakespeare’s immortal characters to young audiences. It also touches on themes of adolescence, parent’s unconditional love and friendship. “William” promotes respect for teachers and classmates and advocates a love for reading and appreciating literature – Shakespeare or not.

“William” play dates are August 14, 19-21, 26-28, September 2-4, 9-11, 16-18, 23-25, 2011 with shows at 10:00A.M. and 3P.M. The PETA Theater Center is located at No. 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City.

"SEUSSICAL - Anything Possible" will run fron August to December 2011

Now one of the most performed shows in America, "Seussical" is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty ("Ragtime," "Once On This Island") have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Will Think" as the spirit of imagination transports the colorful characters from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

For this version, certain plot elements have been simplified and runs approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes - perfect for presentation in schools.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.
